Our good friend and all round top dude, CJ Swaby is running a Muay Thai pad workshop with one of the UK's foremost MT exponents, Phil Ireland.

Whether you are a martial artist looking to complement and enhance your current training or you are a fitness professional looking for the best tuition in martial arts fitness training (none of that glorified aerobics with a bit of arm flinging masquerading as "combat training") or you are just looking for some super tough, supremely effective training to get yourself in shape then this workshop is for YOU.

The course is being held at Energie Fitness (where we held our Kettlebell Intensive Workshop in November) and is a well equipped studio with a smoothie bar and sauna to kick back in after the workshop!

Contact Phil Ireland on 07967 963309 or Nicky Carter on 07757 648 751 for booking and further details

A bit more about Muay Thai:
Muay Thai (Thai Boxing) came to Britain in the early eighties and is the ancient fighting art of Siam (now Thailand ), originated from the military use of sword and spear (Krabi- Krabong) by the Siamese armies defending their homeland during the 1600's. After many years of conflict, the borders finally settled, Siam relaxed into a peaceful but defensive lifestyle. The rulers, knowing peace is something you must be willing to fight and die to maintain, developed Muay Thai as a way to keep their soldiers sharp. Yearly contests, putting the best fighters from the military against the best their neighbouring countries could produce developed into the modern sport.

Muay Thai is now renowned as one of the toughest sports on earth and uses 8 weapons and is sometimes referred to as the ‘science of 8 limbs, these weapons are 2 fists, 2 shins (the striking area for a kick), 2 knees and 2 elbows. Bouts are now fought over 5, 3 minute rounds and strikes are allowed everywhere except the groin and spine.

As the sport has spread world wide there are variations to Muay Thai to help encourage people in to this intense sport. The most commonly known is Kickboxing which eliminate elbows, knees, any form of clinch as well as low kicking (to the Thigh). Much more loyal to the art are European style Thai Boxing which have different classes to allow novices to gain experience in the ring:

• Amateur (which is fought over 3, 1.5 minute rounds with no knees or elbows allowed to the head and with pads on)
• C class which is with no knees or Elbows allowed to the head and competed over 3, 2 minute rounds
• B Class which has the same rules as C Class but fought over 5, 2 minute rounds
• A Class is Original Muay Thai, where Knees and Elbow Strikes are allowed to the head and contests are on for 5, 3 minute rounds.

The most prestigious place to fight in the world is one of the main stadiums in Bangkok, Thailand either Lumpini or Rajadamnern both of these have there own ranking systems and Champions. There are also 2 main events annually in Thailand which are complete days of Muay Thai and very prestigious to compete on, these are the King’s Birthday (for men) and the Queen’s Birthday (for women) and has foreigners fighting against Thai’s.

For more information please contact Phill Ireland 0796 796 3309 or Nicky Carter on 07757 648 751.
