"A few years ago, whilst rehabbing a broken leg, I stumbled (excuse the pun) across Pavel Tsatsouline and his 'low tech/high concept' Russian Kettlebell Challenge. With a background in martial arts I was familiar with some of his bodyweight and mobility drills but it was the power of the Kettlebell and its immediate benefits that changed everything. Unlike conventional dumbbells, the kettlebell’s offset center of gravity made even the simplest lifts more demanding. Suddenly 16 kilos didn’t feel like 16 kilos anymore.
In May 2007 I found myself, a lone Scotsman in Denmark and in the company of 50 athletes, sportsmen, personal trainers, doctors, physical therapists and martial artists, from Europe and America, attending the Russian Kettlebell Challenge Instructors Certification.
Now, as Scotland’s only RKC Certified Instructor I’m keen to show people just how safe and effective real Russian Kettlebell training can be.
Training and teaching Kettlebells I think movements rather than muscles. I teach a Kettlebell Basics course which introduces the six foundation lifts; the swing, snatch, clean, press, squat and the Turkish Get Up. Great emphasis is placed upon safety and recovery so that the cumulative effect is one of wellbeing and not overtraining. Kettlebell training should leave you invigorated not decimated.
In Edinburgh have launched a series of weekly classes interspersed with park sessions (weather permitting!) with a range of people attending, from desk bound office workers to martial artists. At the end of the course, I’ll have equipped the participants with a solid understanding of the basic lifts and the tools to put together workouts specific to their own needs. A few sessions, your own Kettlebell and you can kiss that gym membership goodbye. Over the coming year I’ll be holding Kettlebell workshops in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Dundee (and anywhere else in Scotland that’s interested in getting fit).
I’m also interested in working with any Martial Arts clubs who want to introduce a form of training that will skyrocket their members conditioning levels.
Whether you are an average person looking for extraordinary results, an athlete looking for an edge or you’re simply looking for a fun way to lose weight without resorting to boring cardio and want to toughen up and get fit again, Kettlebells have the answer."
